So I started at 3 stars with this review. Mostly because I found the food to be completely unremarkable. It wasn't bad, to be sure. It just wasn't great, or even anything special. I ordered a New York strip, medium rare. It was cooked just fine. For some reason, though, it was just very average. Then I dropped down to 2 stars for two reasons: first, the price. A steak that costs me $31 in Johnson City better be amazing, and this wasn't. Second, we are there on a Saturday night, and before we were done eating, the staff had begun removing the tables and chairs around us to make way for turning the place into a night club later. So that was weird. Anyhow, 2 stars. It's average, but expensive. And they care more about being a night club than they care about being a restaurant.

Sunday brunch is fantastic. $17 and well worth it. Can't wait to go back.

Nice place for Johnson City! Came here about 3 times in a week because we're trying to coordinate for an upcoming event and plan on using this facility as the venue. The owner was incredibly accommodating and flexible. They have a great spacious backroom that is separate from the front of the restaurant and can be used for private parties. We were worried that it would cost a great deal to use them as a venue, but we were pleasantly surprised to find planning the event to be very affordable and reasonable. Would definitely recommend to others to use this place as a venue - the owner is very good to work with. On the weekend, the place became a hopping night club. There was a surprisingly widespread clientele for the nightclub - young college students, older 40-somethings, a smattering of cougars, and people of all ethnic and sexual orientation (I got hit on by a girl - very flattering). The music could've been better, but everyone seemed to be having fun nonetheless. During the day, if you come in for lunch, you wouldn't believe it's the same place. Classy, laidback, great natural lighting, and pleasant décor. The menu is quite good. Lunch service on the weekend was a bit slow for us, but it seemed they were understaffed that particular weekend, so our one waiter was overwhelmed. Check it out!

We had our first visit here for my daughter's college graduation. The atmosphere was nice, quiet and lights were low, as we arrived on time for our reservations - AT Opening time. As we were seated, the waitress announced apologies for the scanty menu, as they were booked up for the night and expected a large crowd later (excuse??) -- and they were out of slaw, which came with our meal. ((The offering for the slaw was "a few extra fries or hush puppies.")) My husband and I ordered the Fish 'n Chips, a $15 dish and the cheapest thing on the menu. They did not want to substitute a vegetable for the slaw without charging for extra, and a salad was $4 more. The fish was almost exactly like Long John's or Captain D's, and really overly greasy. The vegetables were good flavored. The waitstaff was attentive. But I won't be back, ever. A $40 tab for what we got, was unreasonable.

I wish we would have liked this place more because it was such and absolutely beautiful location and building. The food was just so-so. We ordered the crab and artichoke dip appetizer and it was cold in the center. Sure sign of a microwave in the back instead of it being made fresh. My husband had the ribeye and it was very fatty and not seasoned well. I tried the shrimp and grits which is a staple for any low-country themed restaurant and it was not great. Shrimp was buried under my grits and the tails were still on which meant I was bobbing for shrimp before I could start my meal. The service was GREAT and we were very impressed with it, but the problem is the food was not the best part of the experience and that is just too bad. On our way out we were asked for money by a couple of men just hanging around the front entrance. This is not a big deal but the hostess came out and knew them by name which made it feel like this was a pretty regular thing,

After at least 10 visits over the past year, my family has finally given up on The Battery. It really is a shame as this place has so much unrealized potential. When they were open for lunch, I had several good experiences, but dinner has been a different story. Service is always slow, and the place seems very understaffed. I've rarely gotten what I consider to be good service. The biggest problem, however, is the food. After many dinner visits, I've never left the restaurant with everyone in my party feeling like they had a good meal. Problems we've had: fried shrimp that had overcooked breading but mushy shrimp inside, steaks overcooked or undercooked, greasy chicken, overcooked vegetables, and on and on. The impression I've gotten is that while the menu many have been planned by a chef, it is being executed by people with far less expertise and commitment to quality control. Some of the food being sent out of the kitchen was so poorly prepared I cannot believe the expediter and wait staff agreed to serve it. I've never seen a server at dinner that didn't seem very harried. There are consistently far too few staff to handle the level of business on a busy evening. Johnson City needs good upscale restaurants of this sort. If the Battery would hire a strong chef and give him or her control over the kitchen, things might improve. I wouldn't even mind paying more for a consistently good meal. Until I hear reports of things being much better, we're staying away.

This place was outright the most horrible restaurant I have ever been to. We made a reservation a week in advance, and as soon as we arrived 10 minutes early, we went to sit at the bar to wait. Then, another hostess came up to us, on Valentine's Day, and asked us if we minded eating at the bar. Um, NO. They were not busy at all. Half the tables were empty. After sitting at the bar for 8 or so minutes, no one said a word to us, then finally, one of the 3 bartenders (there were 10 people sitting bar side) told us they were understaffed and she would be with us in a few minutes. After getting sat, we then watched as all the bartenders/waitresses chatted with friends/customers, as we sat with empty glasses and no service. Then, the waitress was completely lost, and only had 1 other table besides us. My boyfriends drink took 15 to make it from the bar to our table and my glass stayed empty. We finally got fed up and spoke to a manger that was clueless about running a restaurant. We had saw him walking around, watching the waitresses and bartenders not doing their job, and he walked by our table numerous times when we had no drinks. He made excuses. It was a pitiful excuse for a restaurant. We left and went to Wellingtons and it was fantastic.

This place gets an A+ for atmosphere and an A++ for Sunday morning brunch. Dinner is the only time I have heard complaints about the quality of food and it is usually when they are slammed and understaffed. If you love raw oysters, this is one of the best places to get them from when they are in season.

I had dinner at The Battery on June 20, 2012--the first visit for both me and my date. We ordered the oysters Rockefeller and the crawfish from the raw bar as our shared starters and, for entrees, the pan-seared scallops along with the risotto of the day (carrot and broccoli) and the collard greens, and the filet mignon with a baked potato and the steamed broccoli. The oysters Rockefeller were a nice start to the meal--lots of flavor and arrived at the table at the perfect temperature. The crawfish were tasty, although a bit rubbery from being (just slightly) overcooked. Overall, my main course was disappointing. The flavor profiles were good, but the poor execution overshadowed the positives. I am not sure if the scallops came out of the freezer (admittedly, it would be tough to find fresh in east Tennessee), but the texture and taste was a bit off. They were presented alone on a plate with the most sparing garnish--which I liked, because scallops, when well-prepared, can really hold their own. The risotto was terribly, unforgivably overcooked and by far the worst part of the meal--gummy and pasty and quite a disappointment. The collards were flavorful--prepared with bacon--and the best part of the meal. Pros: The atmosphere is great, as is the location in downtown JC. The drink menu is expansive with a good selection of mixed drinks, wine, and microbrews, including local beer choices. Cons: Service was was slow and our server seemed harried, despite it being a relatively slow weekday night service. The most important part of the restaurant--the food--is really not that good. The bottom line: This is probably the best restaurant in Johnson City. Unfortunately, crowning a beauty queen out of an ugly crop doesn't make the winner beautiful. Every time you're tempted to eat here, put $50 in a travel fund instead and head to to the Carolina coast for some fresh seafood.

Great surprise for our first time in Johnson City! Here for the Blue Plum festival. Absolutely terrific restaurant! Great selection, delivers to perfection. Interesting offerings! Raw oysters like sitting bayside on the Chesapeake. Scallops grilled to perfection, nice pomegranate sauce. Green beans sautéed.....oh my! Crab cakes were good but should not be labelled as Maryland (tough to please a Marylander)!

This restaurant is wonderfully set up for catching up with old friends and mingling. There is a bar located in the front as well as the back which makes it great for socializing whether it's a large or small party. The food is good due to them having a professional chef in their kitchen. The clientele is more professional to young professional than collegiate earlier on and then slowly changes to more collegiate as the DJ starts up later on in the evening. It can be a fun place to hang out.
